CHAPTER FORTY-THREE: How to Care for Your Eyelash Extensions
So you just got your lashes done — they’re full, fluttery, & you’re obsessed. But how do you make sure they stay that way?
Whether you’re rocking classic, hybrid, or volume lashes, proper aftercare is everything. Not only does it help your extensions last longer, but it also keeps your natural lashes healthy & your eyes free of irritation.
Here’s your no-fluff guide to caring for your lash extensions like a pro.
1. The First 24 Hours Matter
Avoid water, steam, & sweat during the first 24–48 hours. Your lash adhesive is still curing, and exposure to moisture can cause premature shedding or poor retention.
That means:
No saunas, hot showers, or workouts
Skip the facial or cry-sesh (sorry!)
Be gentle — no rubbing or tugging
2. Clean Your Lashes — Yes, Really!
Clean lashes = healthy lashes.
Use a lash-safe cleanser (not oil-based) to remove makeup, debris, & natural oils that build up along your lash line.
How to clean:
Apply cleanser with a fluffy brush or fingertips
Gently work it into the lash line in downward strokes
Rinse with lukewarm water & pat dry with a lint-free towel
Aim to clean your lashes 3–4 times a week — daily if you wear eye makeup.
3. Brush Them Daily
Use a clean spoolie brush to gently fluff & separate your lashes every morning (also after cleansing). This keeps them looking neat while preventing tangling or twisting.
Pro tip: Brush them up & out — not side to side.
4. Avoid Oil-Based Products
Oil breaks down lash adhesive.
That means no oil-based cleansers, moisturizers, makeup removers, or cream eyeshadows near your eyes.
Check labels! Even micellar waters & eye creams can sneak in oil.
5. Sleep Smart
If you’re a stomach sleeper, we hate to break it to you — it’s time to try your side or back.
Smushing your face into your pillow = bent, crimped, or missing lashes.
Consider a silk pillowcase to reduce friction, or even a lash sleep mask made specifically to protect your extensions.
6. Book Your Fills on Time
Even with the best care, natural lash shedding means you’ll need a fill every 2–3 weeks to keep your lashes full & even.
Waiting too long can lead to gaps & may require a full new set — nobody wants that.
Bonus: What Not to Do
No waterproof mascara or eyelash curlers
Don’t pull, twist, or play with them (even if one feels loose!)
Avoid cotton pads or anything that sheds fibers near the eyes
Final Word:
The better you care for your lashes, the better they’ll look & the longer they’ll last. Your lash artist can give you product recs & customized tips based on your set + lifestyle.
